REQUIRED LEADERS

All adult volunteers play a valuable role in Work Camp, but Required Leaders are set apart for two reasons:

  1. They lead the teams of students who go out into the city to serve each day
  2. They count toward the volunteer quota that each church needs to meet in order to bring students to Work Camp (1 Required Leader for every 3 students attending).

Required Leaders help transport students to and from their sites, supervise the work, teach skills, maintain safety and make sure we goals are accomplished during the week of Work Camp.  Required Leaders are must attend the first evening of Work Camp for team orientation and all three work days.

There are four areas where Required Leaders can choose to serve:

Worksite Leader – Each worksite has 3-4 adult Worksite Leaders who transport the students to their site, supervise the students’ work, teach skills and keep the project on schedule.  One adult volunteer will be designated as the project lead, and the other worksite leaders assist.  Worksite projects can include replacement of flooring, ceiling repair, bathroom renovation, painting, decluttering, yard work and other light construction projects.  Ideally half of the adults on the site should have average to advanced handyman skills, but less experienced adults can still participate on one of these teams when paired with a more skilled adult.  There is a training session prior to Work Camp to prepare these leaders for the experience.  Student campers from 7th to 12th grades are eligible to serve on Worksites.

Sidewalk Club Leader – Each club has 2-3 adult Sidewalk Club Leaders who transport the students to their site(s), supervise the students’ activities and interactions with neighborhood kids and assist as needed.  Sidewalk Club activities include crafts, singing songs, sports, skits and evangelism.  There are training events leading up to Work Camp to prepare adult volunteers and create comradery amongst the students.  Only student campers from 10th to 12th grades are eligible to serve on Sidewalk Club.

Sport Camp Leader – Leaders can choose to serve at Basketball or Soccer Camp, held at either a Recreation Center or charter school location in the city.  Adult volunteers help supervise both the student campers and the neighborhood kids who participate in the program, administer the program registration, teach classes and bible study to players who are waiting to compete and provide general oversight of the program.  There are training events for the leaders and student campers leading up to the week of Work Camp.  There are generally fewer students who serve on a Sport Camp team, and only students in 11th and 12th grades are eligible to serve at a Sport Camp.

Agency Support Leader – Each Agency Support team has 3-4 adult Worksite Leaders who transport the students to their site(s), supervise the students’ work, teach skills and keep the project on schedule.  One adult volunteer will be designated as the project lead, and the other worksite leaders assist.  Agency Support projects can include yard work, cleaning, sorting and organizing, spending time with residents of assisted living facilities, building food packages, and other light intensity service projects for local area non-profit organizations.  Student campers of all grade levels are eligible to serve on Agency Support.
